Messerschmitt Bf 109

The  Bf 109, designed by Willy Messerschmitt,  was one of the first modern fighters of the era (when it appeared most were biplanes), including such features as low cantilever wings, full-metall monocoque construction, retractable landing gear, closed canopy and a liquid-cooled V12 engine. Originally designed as an interceptor, later models were improved and developed to play multiple roles, as a day and night fighter, bomber escort, reconaissance, fighter-bomber and ground attack aircraft. When thinking of the Luftwaffe in WWII, it is the Messerschmidt Bf 109 that immediatly springs to mind. This was the most widely used of all the German fighters and was produced in huge numbers, initially serving during the Spanish Civil War and constantly improved during all WWII. Flown by many of the world's highest scoring air “Aces” (Eric Hartmann, Hermann Graf, Gerhard Barkhorn, Günther Rall, Hans Hahn, Heinz Bär, etc. ) achieving  a score of more than 900 victories, the Bf 109 remained competitive with the latest Allied fighter aircraft until the end of the war. Some Bf 109 saw post-war service in different countries, but it was in Spain were did it longer, till late 1960's (Hispano HA-11129 version), wich appeared in movies as “The Battle of Britain”....so we can say anecdotally that this plane entered and ended service in Spain...
