Hanomag was the nickmame of this versatile German haltrack, which role was the transport of troops (infantry, panzergrenadiers) to the front being protected from enemy small fire and indirect artillery fire, spearhead them and exploit the gains won by the tanks. The SdKfz 251 proved the concept of a competent cross-country tactical vehicle for armoured infantry units. This role demonstrated to be so effective that was copied by the Allies against German forces in the late war period and is used nowadays by most modern armies. The standard version was equipped with a 7.92 mm MG 34 machine gun mounted at the front of the open compartment, and a 7.92 mm MG 42 on a rear mount. Later variants performed a wide range of weapons as mortars, rockets, howitzers, anti-tank guns, flamethrowers, etc. More than 15,000 units of SdKfz 251 were produced during the war, mainly by Hanomag, but also other factories as Adlerwerke, Auto Union, Skoda, MNH and Borgwar.
