General Patton was reluctant to the use of sandbags to increase the protection of tanks, so he forbade its use to the tank crews of its Third Army. A better solution was to increase the armor with added steel plates taken from "cannibalized" knocked-out and damaged tanks. A good example is this M4A3E8 Sherman Tank named "Thunderbolt VII", from
Colonel Creighton Abrams, 37th Tank Battalion, 4th Armored Division, Germany, March 1945... Note the apliqueé armor on hull front and sides, and turret sides too. The crew of this tank also added an extra .30 cal machine gun on the turret top, beside the .50 cal "official" one.
