The Centurion was designed on the second half
of WWII as a tank capable to deal with the German Panther and Tiger tanks with
success, but the war ended before the first
Centurion tanks could enter in action. It was during post-war conflicts
where this sturdy, reliable and powerful tank demonstrated to be one of the
most effective tanks in combat during decades. The Centurion could also afford
heavy damage without beeing knocked out and keep fighting. It served in several
Armies, but it was in the Israeli Armored Corps (Tsahal) where the upgraded Centurion variant
named Sho’t Kal earned its legendary status. In the hands of their brave crews, during the Yom Kippur War,
on the Golan Heights (1973), a force of just 177 Sho’t Kal faced a superior force of almost
1400 Syrian T-55 and T-62 tanks and defeated it, after an exhausting duel that
lasted 81 hours without a rest. This battle brought the Israeli forces to the
limit, but the Syrian defeat was enormous and left a trace of hundreds of destroyed
tanks in what was called The Battle of Valley
of Tears…
