Will Fey, the forgotten Panzer Ace of Normandy (1)

It is known for all the defeat suffered by the Wehrmacht in Normandy, but it must be said that some Panzer units achieved spectacular victories in particular. This was the case of the Schwere SS Panzer Abteilung 102 Ace Will Fey, that with its crew and their Tiger I nº 134 scored the amazing number of "kills" of 69 Allied tanks (Sherman, Firefly and Churchill), 22 other armored vehicles and 5 antitank guns destroyed. This happened in the short period of time between 9th of July (arrival of the 102-SS Pz. Abt. to the Caen sector) to 18th August 1944, date that Tiger I 134 had to be abandoned by its crew by engine breakdown. But this was not all, Will Fey, by foot,  kept destroying enemy tanks with Panzerfaust and he avoided capture during the German retreat. Finally he fought in the Battle of Berlin, without a tank also and maybe this saved his life. After the war he continued his military career entering the Bundeswehr. But the question is, why he did not get a new Tiger, as other Panzer Aces did? It seems to be that Fey, Ace of Aces in Normandy, was forgotten...

A sample of the mark left by the 102-SS Pz. Abt. in Normandy is this Tiger I in display nowadays in Vimoutiers. It is believed that was abandoned by its crew by engine failure during the Falaise-Pocket withdrawal. It had the turret tank number 213. Source: Batailles nº 4 (Histoire et Collections)
It is a pleasure to share with you this pictures I took during my last visit to Normandy.
