The Soviet fighter Polikarpov I-16 had a revolutionary design for its time. It was the first monoplane fighter with low-wing cantilever wings and retractable landing gear. This aircraft played a very important role during the Spanish Civil War and in the beginning of WWII. The Polikarpov I-16, together with its predecessor (still biplane) Polikarpov I-15, formed the backbone of the Spanish Republican Air Force as a fighters and interceptors, involved both in ground and air attacks. Special to mention are The Battle for Madrid and The Battle of the Ebro. These fighters had to face great formations of Nationalist bombers escorted with fighters from the Condor Legion and achieved several victories and kills over the more sophisticated Me Bf-109...
