Erprobugskommando 262 and Komando Nowotny were the genesis of what later would be the first operational jet fighter unit in the world, the Jagdgeschwader 7 "Nowotny", wich nickname was in honour to Walter Nowotny, a Luftwaffe famous fighter Ace and the Group Leader of Kommando Nowotny. Nowotny was shot down in action returning to base after a combat mission with his Me 262 "White 8". Jagdgeschwader 7 was equipped with the innovative jet fighter Me262, far superior to any other contemporary piston engine aircraft. JG 7 dedicated his task to defend Germany from the constantly air bombers attack, shooting down several "Viermot" and the escort fighters that accompanied them. Although the technical superiority of the Me 262, the lack of fuel, supplies and human resources (pilots), the disastrous situation of Germany on the last months of war and the overwhelming numerical superiority of Allies made impossible to change the course of the war.
