Modern warfare tank battle tactics are based in what was learned during WWII, this is, first to see, first to engage, first to shoot, first to win...And this were totally valid during the tank battles in the first Gulf War, fifty years later. American M1 Abrams engaged  the Iraqui T-72 at a ranges of  2000 to 3000 meters. The trainnig of Abrams crews in a quick and accurate aim and shot, the superior thermal imaging sights of the Abrams and the flat terrain of the desert contributed to the victory over the Iraqui armored forces that were wipped out, although they fought courageously.
